Colonization

1. Terminology

Colonization

Colonization — the process of settling and developing new territories and lands.

Colony

Colony — a dependent territory under the authority of a foreign state (metropolis), without independent political and economic power, governed under a special regime.

Typically, the colonial regime does not grant rights comparable to those of the metropolis citizens. At the same time, citizens of the metropolis enjoy greater power and privileges in colonial territories compared to the indigenous population.

Creation of colonies — the main tool for:

  • expanding influence on the world stage and geostrategic interests;
  • obtaining points of useful minerals.

How a colony is created (through RP):

  1. a series of posts about expeditions to the sites of the future colony;
  2. a post about the direct creation of the colony indicating the landing site of the colonists.

1.1 World Sea Trade Points

Key sea trade points:

  • La Manche Strait
  • Bosporus Strait
  • Danish Straits
  • Gibraltar Strait

La Manche

One of the busiest trade routes. The strait separates Great Britain and France, and also connects the North Sea with the Atlantic Ocean.

Bosporus Strait

Strait between Europe and Asia Minor, connecting the Black Sea with the Marmara Sea. Forms a significant route between Europe and Asia, along which oil is transported, as well as commercial and military trade.

Danish Straits

A system of straits between the Scandinavian and Jutland peninsulas. Includes:

  • Little Belt (smallest width 0.5 km)
  • Great Belt (3.7 km)
  • Øresund (10.5 km)
  • Kattegat (60 km)
  • Skagerrak (110 km)

The Danish Straits are the main sea route connecting the ports of the Baltic Sea with the ports of the world ocean.

Gibraltar Strait

Intercontinental strait between the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula and the northwestern coast of Africa, connecting the Mediterranean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean.

2. Colonization Rules

  1. For colonization, it is necessary to first build the Ministry of Colonial Affairs in the capital of the metropolis. Then it is necessary to write an RP post about scouting the required territories.

  2. To colonize a certain territory, at least one ship of type «.........» and a small military fleet will be required. A sea route to this territory is also required.

2.1 Colonial Administration

To prevent the collapse of the colony, it is necessary to build a city building «Colonial Administration» in any city of the colony.

The building allows:

  • registering city buildings and mines in colonies;
  • maintaining manageability and stability of the colony.
  1. The status of the colonizing state must be «Middle Power» or «Great Power».

Colonization of a state with the status «Middle Power» is limited (does not allow colonizing a large territory in one region). Exception — point 3.1.

3.1 Exception for Secondary Powers

The status of a colonizing state can also be held by a Secondary Power provided that it actively pursues colonial policy.

3.1.1 Verder Decision

The decision that a secondary state is pursuing an active colonial policy is made by the verder based on the results of all posts.

  1. Colonial buildings cannot be created in the metropolis.

Main colonial regions:

  • Africa
  • North America
  • South America
  • Asia
  • Oceania

Regions where colonies can be created

Creation of colonies is possible in 5 regions:

  • North America
  • South America
  • Africa
  • Asia
  • Oceania

3. Founding a Colony and Colonization Goals

Why Colonies Are Founded

  1. Control of troop movements, fleets, trade routes, and population migrations of other empires; preventing their penetration into the region and reducing their influence.
  2. Considerations of imperial prestige and increasing geopolitical weight in international treaties and decisions.
  3. Civilizational, cultural, linguistic expansion and strengthening the legitimacy of power in the metropolis/colonies.
  4. Capture of territories with a large number of useful minerals.
  5. Other RP reasons.

PS: all these points add prestige points to the metropolis.

3.1 Order of Founding a Colony (Sea Colonization)

To found a colony, it is necessary:

  1. to build the Ministry of Colonial Affairs (see building mechanics);
  2. to write 2 RP posts, where it is specified where the landings of research groups go;
  3. to write a post about the arrival of the colonial company, indicating:
    • name of the colonial company
    • name of the city
    • nick of the colony head
  4. after the city appears on the map — build a port in it;
  5. then you can proceed to the development of the company.

Colony Development

To develop the colony, it is necessary to build the building «Colonial Administration», which allows:

  • conducting reforms within the colony;
  • registering buildings /builds and mines.

Important: all colonies must be founded on the coast.

3.2 Land Colonization

  1. Land colonization — a way of expansion for countries that have territories that can be colonized without mandatory use of the fleet.
    Example: development of Siberia by the Russian Tsardom.

In land colonization, new territories are annexed directly to the metropolis and are not a separate nation.

  1. This type of colonization is characterized by a large number of expeditions.

2.1 Order through RP Posts

  • For each expansion, 3 RP posts about scientific expeditions to the territories planned to be developed are required.
  • In the 4th RP post, the state writes about the resettlement of colonists to these territories and attaches a map of the developed territories.
  • The administration, after reviewing the post, issues a verdict:
    • approves the colonization and annexes new territories;
    • or refuses.
  1. In case of refusal, the administration contacts the head of state and sends a map of maximum possible expansion.

  2. The player has no right to challenge the administration's decision if, in his opinion, the territories are insufficient.

4. Straits and Access to Colonies

  1. For a state to start colonization through continents, the path to which passes only through a strait, it is necessary to conclude an agreement on permission to move through sea straits.

  2. Without access to straits, colonies remain defenseless (they can be taken without a fight).

Types of Agreements

There are 2 types of agreements:

  1. Agreement on passage of military vessels
  2. Agreement on passage of peaceful vessels
